THE STORY BEHIND ICE
The great thing about experimenting with rhythm, sound and texture in improvised music is that it can take you in certain directions and often unexpected areas. The idea for this album began in a mainly percussion-based form which subsequently evolved into a very different outcome. Less by design and more by accident I was able to produce the foundation for an idea I had perceived would be rather dark and other worldly.
My initial percussion track wasn’t really giving me what I was looking for once it was completed so I decided to play with differing effects such as stretching the sound.
Dave and I had recently discussed the intention of producing another Informed Speculators album, taking us back to pure improvisation and away from our recent sojourns into blues and jazz. This was our intention when we first started working together as a duo way back in the 1980’s. The resulting outcome produced a soundscape which was both dark and seemingly bleak and cold in its overall feel. This gave me an idea for a concept based upon ice in its various phases. I divided and edited what was essentially a very long sequence of sound into three parts which became Ice Form, Ice Freeze and Ice Break, I added some extra texture and synth and sent them to Dave. He worked his usual magic with additional guitar and piano which in turn shaped and enhanced the finished tracks, this is the result.
Not to be filed under blues, jazz or easy listening.
